blog #11
I'm glad that you assigned us the library ethnography project because before that i had no clue on how or where to go to look up a book. The project helped me out a lot and now i will know for future reference on how and what to do to find a book. I believe you should assign your next semester students this assignment because I'm sure i am not the only one who didn't know to look up and find a book in that huge library. I am a sophomore here and just learned about this so if you have freshmen students i definitely think you should assign this to help them adapt to the university better. I think you covered all of the information within enough time. Also all of the information you covered was very helpful and i will always reference back to this class. I have used the skills you taught us on how to use the library databases and catalog. I have also used the citation sheets that we filled out in class to help with a citation in another class and I will keep those papers until i have the format memorized. Also the research assignment we are currently working on has helped me so much. I have learned how to properly make a bibliography and how to properly conduct research from using a research question.

When using a book you are likely to find in depth inforamtion about a bunch of different topics. This is a good source to use because it will give reliable information and indepth information. You could use quotes out of the book as well as stats. When using a blog post you are likely to find opinionated information. This is not a good source because the information is bias and not crediable. You could use this when doing a persuasive topic or not use it at all. When using a scholarly journal you are likely to find crediable and peer reviewed in depth information. This is a very good source to use when doing researh because it is definitely reliable and crediable and most teachers recommend this. You could use this to prove something in your research. When using Wikipedia you can find basic inforamtion on a topic. This is not a good source because anyone can edit the information and it is not crediable. You can use this to get started doing research but not to cite information. When using a podcast you are likley to get opionated information from people. This is not a good source to use unless your know the person is reliable and has good credientials. You could quote the person if it helps with your research topic and you know for a fact it is crediable.

To find the full text of the article provided I went to the UWG library home page and clicked on GALILEO & Databases and copied and pasted the title of the article in the basic search box and it went right to it. It was easier then i thought!
Annotated Bibilography Homework
An annotated bibliography is much like what i would call a "work cited page." It is a list of the sources you used in your work or research with a sumarization of some sort. It can be a list of books, articles, journals, or pictures but all of these must be cited in an annotated bibliography so your work is not considered plagiarism. An annotated bibliography is very helpful when doing a research project because it helps you learn more about your topic. It makes you read more carefully so you will be able to write a better summary. I believe you are requiring us to write one because these are extremely helpful when doing research projects and that is what we are working on in class. Also because we can understand what we are reading more if we have to summarize and tell whether it is a helpful/good source to use for our topics. Our annotated bibliography's could also help others if they are trying to understand our the research and why we used the sources we chose.

Plagiarism, Paraphrasing correctly, Copyright, Open content, Open access, and Licenses all have to do with library research because all of these are tools to help you research and cite correctly without getting in trouble with your professor or in severe cases the law. By doing any of these incorrectly it could result it a failing grade to expulsion for the University. The knowledge of each of these topics can help in any classes where a research assignment is assigned. It is crucial to follow all the rules and guidelines to properly cite a source when using it for any kind of research assignment in college or even in the work place. There are a very different set of rules for each of these topics/tools so it is very important everyone knows about each of these. Licenses and Copyright can get a bit confusing so if you don't know exactly what your doing with no question then you need to either look on the internet for the specific rules or omit the video, photo, or quote from your work.

Elsevier is an academic scholarly publisher that is struggling with creating easier ways to access journals. Librarians were interviewed to input their views on how to make it easier, they stated it would be to costly to produce a hard copy and that an internet copy would be much more sufficient. Some professors have began to boycott for tax payers to be able to access it freely.
The New England Journal is an medical journal of past and present. It is known for being very accurate and giving precise information that you are asking for. It is free for tax payers and they are able to access it any time for free of charge.
The Changing Nature of Knowledge is about how knowledge as grown over time, from paper to books to now the internet. The internet is the basis of how the earth is run and allows the public to access it any time and we are about to pretty much find out anything about anyone or anything through the internet. The internet will only advance from this day forward!
The common thread throughout these articles is about the public can view these different things they are speaking about in each of the articles suck has journals, book, and the internet. I am very grateful for all of these tools. I use the internet on a daily basis and i don't know what i would do without it. I use scholarly journals for my college classes when i am writing an academic paper or need source for my research.

I think plagiarism is taking someone's work and passing it off as your own without citing or naming the original author. Plagiarism is different from copy righting because copyright is using someone elses song, lyrics, or art without getting permission and plagiarism is using written work and passing it off as your own without the proper citing format. An example of plagiarism that is not copyright is Taylor Swift buying the rights to a songwriters song and not giving them credit and passing them off as your own. An example of Copyright that is not plagiarism is the Ohio state marching band doing their own rendition of the song Gangnam Style and presenting it as a tribute. They still could get sued for using the song without permission.

If i was at a party and heard a group of people talking about a topic i knew a good bit about, i would listen to make sure i heard the topic right and be able to support what i was talking about so i didn't look stupid. If i heard the conversation correctly i would walk up to the group and wait until there was a break where no was was speaking and jump in the conversation. The reason i would wait for a break is because do not want to seem rude or intrusive. If the situation were flipped i would allow someone that knows more about a topic then i do to jump into the conversation as long as they were not rude about it and made a good argument. If i had question about what they were saying i would ask and also as them how they found out the information they were relaying!

october 3rd post
I think the basic idea of filter bubbles does apply to databases but you choose what you want to see not a robot in the computer. There are many different filters to choose from to narrow down your search or to get more results, like different subjects, what kind of text you want, source type, and date. I searched Eric's database at EBSCOhost and MEDLINE with full text at ESCOhost. There were very differnt databases. The MEDLINE database contained medical information on childhood obeisty as well as figures or percentages of medical cases they deal with obesity in children. Eric's database contained the risks children faced if becoming obese. By searching different databases this helps determine what you want to see. For example, do not search a medical database if you are not looking for any kind of medical information. Databases are not like google, you get to choose what information you want to see.

Research thus far!
I have kept my same research quetion which is, How Child Obesity and Video Games are directly related? I have found all my background information on the topic of child obesity. I have also found the statics of child obesity and the growing rate the United States has seen. I still need to find more information on the rate children have become more into video games these past few years and see if there is a pattern with the growing rate of obesity. I also may want to research why video games have become more trending with children and if this is going to increase in the future or decrease because people have realized there are related in certain ways. If parents have a problem with their child gaining more and more weight due to playing video games and not playing outside, are they trying to do something about it or are they supporting it to make there children happy? I still have a lot of work to do to answer my research question in full!

"filter bubbles"
I don't think that filter bubbles are a good thing. Limiting the information you can view based on previous views is absurd. How does a robot know what your likes and dislikes are? they don't.. so why are they allowed to filter what we see based on what they think. I believe this will limit the information we will be able to see when searching for our research topic. So before i begin my research on my personal computer i will take a look at the ten steps to pop my filter bubble to allow more information to be shown instead of filtered information they the robots think are useful. The internet has changed drastically over time and for these robots to filter information we see based on previous searches or visited sites is wrong.

Things I've Learned!
This library class has taught me a lot that i can use in my future here at West Georgia. I knew a little bit about citations but doing some of these in class really helped me understand more about it. Ive only used MLA in the past so using another method was helpful. Our library project where we had to find a book in the library was really helpful. I had no clue before entering this class where to even go to look up a book but now i know how and where to find a book if i need one for class or just to read for fun. In my past English classes my professor told me a few criteria on what a good source is but talking about these in class helped me further my knowledge on this topic. I will now know what ans what isn't a good source when doing research papers and other academic writing. I've have learned a little about developing a research question and what needs to be said in order to have a valid question. The question cannot be one that can be easily answered in a paragraph, it needs to be one i can elaborate on. I'm excited to learn more about what this class has to offer!

library catalog vs. high school catalog
Looking up books in the library catalog and looking up books in a high school library are very different. The library catalog has many more books than a high school would have so it makes it more complicated when finding a book on a shelf. In high school we did not have electronic books only printed texts. When searching for a book in the UWG catalog and searching for a book in high school will bring up completly different results. Here a UWG if you type in a word hundreds of books can match your search so it is important to do advance searchs in order to find a specific. In high schools if you know what book you are looking for in the library and you type in a keyword that book will most likely come up at the top of your search. I liked using GIL-FIND in class on Monday. I found it extremely helpful to find a specific book on a certain topic. When using many key words to find a book it will only bring up books with those descriptions. You can use the words AND or OR to help define a search even more.
books
My research topic is how child obesity and video games are directly related and how the more popular the video games get the rate of child obesity also increase. One book that i found extremely helpful was one of the books that was given to us in class, Overcoming Obesity in Childhood and Adolescence. Before i start researching my topic i think it is important to get some background information to learn more about child obesity and the severity of the issue in the United States, and i think this book would give me the information i need in order to start the research process. Another book that i found that was help was a book called Child Obesity. This book is a parents guide to learn how to control their child by controlling their eating habits and their regular exercise. It also points out that watching tv and playing video games is not a way to control your child weight, which is helpful for me and my topic.

Interview
For my research interview I interviewed Carly Welch. She is a Junior here at West Georgia and she is a marketing major. She says she had done many research papers and they key to a successful research paper is having excellent quotes from reliable sources. She said she mainly used the library catalog and Google scholar. She said her favorite research topic she had done was "Cyber Crimes." She told me with good sites and hard work comes success. She also said she found that making an outline helped her out a lot and she recommend I try to do this for my research papers in the future. She said the most important thing is to chose a important topic and something there is a good bit of information on and also something you may be interested in. The most surprising thing she told me was that the outline helped are a lot. I never knew an outline was so useful!

Library Project
http://www.slideshare.net/kolbeywinders/libretho1101 My partner was Kolbey Winders and we both went to the library together and took all the necessary steps that lead us to finding the book we were looking for. We also both worked on the power point together.

Research Question
In class today we learned how to refine our research topics and some things i learned are to not have an opinionated topic. A research question should be about a specific idea that you can elaborate on to be able to get enough information to write a research paper on not just a question that can be answered in one paragraph. My group is researching the topic child obesity and each one of us is elaborating on each of the different factors associated with child obesity. My factor on obesity is how video games and other electronics are directly related to the growing rate of child obesity here in the United States. I believe this is a good research question because although it is very specific i can elaborate on this topic enough to get a good amount of information and inform the class on this major concern many Americans have.Video games and other electronics have been linked to obesity so i don't think i will have a problem getting information to support my research question. I have came up with a research topic that i believe is specific and will allow me to get a great amount of information. My question is: How are video games and other such electronics directly related to the growing rate of child obesity in the United States?

Group Research Topic
Our group came up with child obesity as our research topic. Obesity in children has become a real problem in todays society and one factor could be because of video games and other activites that keep children inside. Now kids are staying inside instead of going outside and getting exercise, this is a major factor with children gaining weight.
